A new modular library shapes a social and learning landscape and provides much needed new personal study space and learning resource at the heart of the school, with a form and expression that is playfully contextual to the arched facade of the original chapel and the brick colonnade of the more recent BSF extension.
A ‘bespoke modular’ approach was integral to the viability of delivering the project without a decant. Steel framed, partially clad modules were craned in and completed in the summer holidays, with landscaping works completed at the start of term. The system allowed us to develop a playful language of form, colour and materiality using three brick colours and a solid burnt pink coating for the arched motif and windows.
Finely tuned considerations such as how the landscaping met the buildings and the introduction of an external colonnade makes the project transcend the assumptions of what a modular project should and could look like.
